About

The Annual Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques

The mission of the Summer Institute is to provide rigorous and high quality graduate training in all phases of survey research. The program teaches state-of-the-art practice and theory in the design, implementation, and analysis of surveys. The Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques has presented courses on the sample survey since the summer of 1948, and has offered such courses every summer since.  Graduate-level courses through the Program in Survey and Data Science are offered from June 6 through July 29 and available to enroll in as a Summer Scholar.

Our classes will be available through a video conferencing system that offers high quality video, audio, and wireless screen sharing across Windows, Mac, Linux, Chrome OS, iOS, Android, Blackberry, Zoom Rooms, and H.323/SIP room systems.

You will need the following to participate in the program:

  • An attachable headphone/microphone (preferable) or audio from your computer
  • An attachable web camera (preferable) or a camera from your computer
  • The following bandwidth requirements

o   600kbps (up/down) for high quality video

o    1.2 Mbps (up/down) for 720p HD video

o   Receiving 1080p HD video requires 1.8 Mbps (up/down)

o   Sending 1080p HD video requires 1.8 Mbps (up/down)

  • A quiet room where you can be during the workshops and lectures without being interrupted

We encourage all participants to use a web camera and a headset. We ask participants to refrain from using built-in web cams and speakers on their desktops or laptops, if possible. We know from our experience in previous online courses that this will reduce the quality of video and audio transmission and therefore will decrease the overall learning experience for all participants in the program.
