Registration Overview

Participants in the Summer Institute may elect almost any combination of courses within the timetable constraints as long as they meet described prerequisites. Participants may not elect more than 6 course hours per four-week session, and no more than a total of 12 course hours for the entire eight weeks of the program without the specific approval prior to registration.

All courses are graduate level classes at an accelerated pace. The workshops are not at the graduate level class pace and do not require the time commitment needed as the graduate level courses offered in the Summer Institute.

Enrollment Options

Participation Without Academic Credit (Summer Scholar)

Summer Scholars are participants who wish to attend courses at the Summer Institute but do not require academic credit or a formal grade for their participation. Summer Scholars are expected participate fully in those courses. In order to initiate admission as a Summer Scholar, participants must complete the online Summer Institute registration.

Applicants participating as a summer scholar will receive a full refund from the Summer Institute if they withdraw before the start of the class. There is a $250 administrative fee if the class is dropped on the first day of a one or two-week class and before the end of the first week of a four or eight-week class. There will be NO REFUNDS for classes that are dropped after these dates. In addition, students registered as summer scholars may not change enrollment status after the first day of class.

Drop/Add Deadlines and Course Cancellations

Due to the condensed nature and advanced level of the Summer Institute course offerings, it is required that students to be present on the first day of class. Similarly, students must drop courses they will not take in a prompt manner as follows:

  • Courses meeting for four weeks or eight weeks may be dropped/added until 5 p.m. on the second day of class.
  • Courses meeting for one week or two weeks may be dropped/added until 5 p.m. on the first day of class.
  • Courses meeting for one day may be dropped/added until 5 p.m. the day before the first day of class.

In the event of low enrollments, it may become necessary to cancel a scheduled course.

Questions regarding the drop/add policy and course cancellations can be directed to the Summer Institute staff (isr-summer@umich.edu).

Technology Requirements

You will need the following to participate in the program:

  • An attachable headphone/microphone (preferable) or audio from your computer
  • An attachable web camera (preferable) or a camera from your computer
  • The following bandwidth requirements

o   600kbps (up/down) for high quality video

o    1.2 Mbps (up/down) for 720p HD video

o   Receiving 1080p HD video requires 1.8 Mbps (up/down)

o   Sending 1080p HD video requires 1.8 Mbps (up/down)

  • A quiet room where you can be during the workshops and lectures without being interrupted

We encourage all participants to use a web camera and a headset. We ask participants to refrain from using built-in web cams and speakers on their desktops or laptops, if possible. We know from our experience in previous online courses that this will reduce the quality of video and audio transmission and therefore will decrease the overall learning experience for all participants in the program.
